Our FAQS
What is a Classical Education/Curriculum?
Classical Education concentrates on the core academic subjects: history, literature, mathematics and science. It builds a strong academic foundation for students in a way that encourages them to become confident and excited about learning. There is a strong emphasis on language, literacy, writing and mastery of the English language. It uses beloved stories and books to teach literature. Explicit instruction is given in phonics and grammar. Primary-source materials and stories are used to teach history, the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the importance and responsibilities of freedom and independence. Scientific inquiry, logic, deduction and experimentation are encouraged as students examine the sciences. In elementary grades, students are introduced to nature to observe, define and classify plants, animals and the solar system. Mathematics is taught in time-tested, proven ways to promote the understanding of order and harmony in the universe. Students discover not just “what” the answer is but “why” it is the answer. Classical Education integrates music and the arts, as well as encouraging respect and discipline. Students will work in small groups. Advancement is based on subject mastery.
What is a Discovery-based learning model?
Discovery-based learning supplements learning from books with hands-on activities which have specific academic or life-skill goals and objectives in mind. These goals are clearly defined from the very start of the activity. Each activity is designed so that students and parents understand the activity’s objective, the exploratory process, the procedures to reach their goals and express their conclusions in writing. Every Discovery-based activity at LHSA will have at least one, and usually several, academic components. The list of possible Discovery-based activities is vast. Some examples include STEAM (Science, Technology, Art, Music), Robotics and Coding, Outdoor Recreation-Stewardship and Safety, Emotional Intelligence, Home Economics, Survival and Preparedness, Winter Sports, Health/Fitness, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. LHSA will concentrate on three main categories per year, one for each 3-month quarter of the school year. Some activities may be concluded in a day while others may take several sessions to complete. Approximately one hour per day of the four-day per week schedule will be spent on Discovery-based learning. It may be naturally incorporated into a complimentary academic subject, or it may be a time specifically dedicated to the Discovery-based activity. Discovery-based learning allows students to learn problem-solving skills, acquire knowledge by doing, understand how things integrate and connect, allow for accountability, retain information longer, increase interest and build a comprehension of cause and effect. Parents will be notified at the beginning of the school year which Discovery-based activities will be incorporated that year.
Are Classical Education and Discovery-based learning compatible?
Classical Education creates a solid academic foundation, while encouraging students to also be self-motivated and critical thinkers. It gives them the educational tools and skills to be successful in junior high and high school. Discovery-based learning builds on this foundation by giving students the tools and means to explore the world, build skills and self-mastery. Discovery-based learning encourages students to explore a question or problem, foster analytical thinking, participate in hands-on activities, reflect on what they’ve learned, apply what they’ve learned and come to research-based conclusions. The Discovery-based model elevates student learning from passive to active as students participate in their own learning experience.
