Lava Hot Springs Academy (LHSA) provides special education services aligned with the requirements outlined in the Idaho Special Education Manual and IDEA. We seek to assure that individualized supports are provided in the least restrictive environment. Our school-wide instructional model embeds specially designed instruction aligned with individual needs into each student’s daily experience. This innovative approach allows for the majority of our students with disabilities to receive special education services in the general education classroom without the compromising time away from general education peers.
Inclusive Classroom Support Through Push-In Services
Push-in supports allow for special education teachers and related service providers to work directly within the general education setting. This collaborative approach allows students to receive targeted supports while remaining fully engaged in core instruction. Services are aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and may include academic interventions, accommodations, modifications, and skill-building support embedded into daily lessons.
LHSA’s push-in model emphasizes:
- Inclusive practices that promote access to grade-level curriculum
- Collaboration between general education teachers, special education staff, and service providers
- Small-group and individualized instruction delivered within the classroom setting
- Consistency and continuity, reducing disruption to student learning
Per IDEA, special education supports and services are determined by the IEP team and based on individual student needs. Therefore, a continuum of service provision is available as appropriate. However, the primary focus remains on inclusion, student independence, and academic growth within the general education environment.

- Section 504: Students with disabilities that substantially impact learning may be eligible for related services and accommodations. A parent may request an evaluation to determine if their child is eligible. Contact your child’s principal for more information.
- Homeless: The liaison for homeless families with school aged children is Tanny Davids, school leader. She may be reached at the LHSA administrative office.
- English Language Learners (ELL): Our goal is to help students reach English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. To accomplish this, ELL students need to take the ELL placement test upon registering. If your child enters the ELL program an individualized plan including assessment accommodations will be developed. All ELL students are required to participate in the Access 2.0 assessment regardless of whether or not they receive services. For further information please contact LHSA administrative office
- Special Education: Special Education serves eligible students with identified disabilities and needing specialized instruction as outlined in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). If a disability is suspected to have an adverse impact on educational progress, an evaluation can be requested. - Child Find: LHSA is responsible to locate, refer and identify all children who are suspected of having a disability and are enrolled in our school. If a child is having significant difficulty with vision, hearing, speech, behavior, is experiencing slow development typical for his/her age, physical impairments, or learning difficulty, he/she may be a child with a disability. Early identification and intervention is essential to help ensure school success. For children ages 3 to 5, Developmental Screenings are held in your local school district.
